Hello dear friends,
There is a moment I never tire of. I’m outside, the air is still, and suddenly a deer is standing at the edge of the trees, watching me as quietly as I’m watching her. Neither of us moves. For a few breaths, the whole world seems to soften.
Many people feel that animals come into our lives as gentle messengers. I don’t think every visit needs a big meaning, but I do believe the angels love to speak to us through nature, and the deer is one of the softest voices they use.
What the deer reminds me of
Gentleness. A deer moves through the forest without forcing anything. When I see one, I ask myself where I’ve been pushing too hard, and whether I can be a little kinder to myself today.
Awareness. Deer are always listening. Their ears turn toward the smallest sound. It’s a sweet nudge to pause and notice what’s around me: the birdsong, the breeze, and the feelings I’ve been rushing past.
Trusting your timing. A deer knows when to stay still and when to step forward. If you’re waiting on a decision, the deer may be reminding you that you don’t have to hurry. The right moment will come.
A simple practice for your next deer sighting
The next time a deer crosses your path, whether in the woods, in a field, or even beside the road, try this:
- Stop and take three slow breaths.
- Quietly say “thank you” for the visit.
- Ask, “What do I need to be gentle with today?”
- Notice the first word, feeling, or picture that comes. Don’t overthink it.
If you like, place a hand over your heart while you do this. In my Reiki practice I often begin with a hand on the heart, and it’s a lovely way to feel present with whatever comes up.
If you don’t see deer where you live
That’s alright. Any animal can be a gentle teacher: the bird at your window, the squirrel racing along a fence, the cat curled up in a sunny spot. The practice is the same. Pause, breathe, give thanks, and listen.
A closing note from me
Dear ones, I hope the next time you meet a deer, you feel that little hush of wonder I feel. Nature is always offering us a moment to slow down and remember that we are cared for. The angels are close, and sometimes they send their messages on four quiet hooves.
With love and light,
Elizabeth
